Matiu/Somes Island

During a visit to friends in Wellington in September 2009, we went on a day trip to Matiu/Somes Island. This 25 ha island is located in Wellington Harbour. Maori have occupied the island for generations. In more recent times, Matiu/Somes Island has served as a human and animal quarantine station, an internment camp, and a military defence position. Nowadays the island is under the full control of the Department of Conservation as a scientific and historic reserve.

Nothing beats Wellington, and especially this island, on a good day!
